Short Story/History of Amul Dairy
Historical facts about Amul Dairy
- Before India’s independence, thousands of cattle owners across villages used to produce milk and supply it to their own and neighboring communities. But, due to the lack of proper storage and distribution systems, any surplus milk that remained unused would often go to waste.
- This inconsistency led to several challenges on some days, there was an excess supply of milk, while on other days, there was little to none. The absence of a structured and sustainable system created instability for both producers and consumers.
- Then there were middlemen appeared and they gave low rates to the farmers and cattle owners. The prices were very unfair. Cattle owners went on strike and stopped selling milk and met Shree Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 1946.
- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel suggested approaching without a middleman and taking full control given to the Farmer and Cattle owner
- New Union gathered just 247 litres from the two villages near Anand (Kheda) and started organisation
- Then Dr. Verghese Kurien taken leadership and Amul grew before looking back.
