Nalsarovar – The paradise of Birds

Nalsarovar is a Paradise of Birds and a Tourist attraction nearby Ahmedabad. Best places for one day picnic from Ahmedabad, Sanand, Surendranagar, Viramgam and Gandhinagar during the winter season. The best time to visit is from 1st December to 15th March early morning is best. It is the only bird sanctuary which allows the Boating.

Best Months to Visit: November to March

Best time: Lake opens at 6 AM and closes at 6 PM. Reach at 5:00 AM to get a ticket on time and jump into the boat. Also, evening from 3 PM onward is a good time to watch birds and a pleasant experience.

Select Days: In December and January, on Saturday, Sunday and Public holidays it is crowded with a lot of people. It is a very low chance that you can see the bird. It becomes a picnic spot during this time.

Boating

The lake is 9 feet in depth maximum and full of the grass in the water. Boats have to pass through the tall grass so diesel/pedal boats can’t work here so enjoy the bamboo boats. The local people are used to serving the boating. Which you can hire based on the selection.

Interesting Facts: Nalsarovar bird sanctuary is the Only bird sanctuary in a Country that allows boating. While all other Bird sanctuary does not allow boating.

Note: Dealing with a boatman is time consuming and long process. It depends on negotiation skills. Simple hint: Stick with Govt Decided price which is generally mentioned on the ticket counter board.

Local Culture and Food

Migrating Bharwad shepherds populate the islands of the lake and on the banks are the Padhars, who are excellent folk dancers, artisans and boatmen. Sama Sindhi, Devipujak, and Khoja Muslims are other casts that are located here.

On the Dhrabla beyt, you will get a full dish of the Kathiyawadi food which includes Bajri Rotla, Lasan Chatni, and Potato Sabji with good natural taste. It is a must-eat if you want to enjoy the food of the local khoja community. Also, they have tea and snack options available. Additionally, management has opened restaurants at boarding places too.

Bird Watching

Pick a good time (working day) you will get a lot of flamingos, pelicans and Brahmyy birds. Keep a high zoom camera and binoculars.

Interpretation Center

The interpretation centre named ‘Abhiruchi Kendra’ has been developed. 70 types of birds are migratory. Out of these 70, only 25 to 30 are easily observed by the visitors and tourists. The interpretation centre focuses on these 30 species. Migratory bird’s travel distance, place of origin, cross-section prototype of Nal Sarovar’s underwater life etc. are exhibited in the centre. 6 Tips

  1. One can hire country boats, on the lake for bird viewing, and picnic at shacks on the islands. Govt has declared fixed fare(Hour basis) of the boats so hire those boats only.
  2. have enough knowledge of the flora and fauna of the lake
  3. On the one the island you can get the Rotla, Chatnis and Dahi (Kathiyawadi foods) and snacks from local people. Visitors may take this as lunch or breakfast.
  4. Keep good binoculars and a book of birds
  5. Keep sunglass, cap and camera.
  6. Seagulls follow you while boating, to keep them around you, you can take popcorn (Non-Fried) / biscuits from the stall near the ticket counter.

Warnings

  • When you buy tickets for boating. One of the boat owners will follow you(The boat driver will be a different one). He will ask for 1000+ rs to cover extra 5-6 points. But do not believe in that. They may force for the first 10-15 mins in the boat rides. But do not respond to it. If you really want to enjoy 5-6 points (which is only taking 15-20 mins), deal with your boat rider while leaving Dhrabla beyt and do negotiate in the boat.
  • Please do not give fried items to birds

Location, How to Reach and Accommodation

  • Location: 64 Km from Ahmedabad. Route : Ahmedabad > Sanand > Nal Sarovar. There is limited public transport available. You have to go by taxi.
  • Accommodation: limited (nil). Generally, it is good for a half-day picnic. There are resorts like Nalsafari, Kensville and Others around 20 Kms away from that so you can stay there too.

The best option is a Via car. You can hire a car or take your bike to reach there. Ahmedabad to Nal Sarovar is around 60 km. From Sanand it’s 45 km. You can reach us by any personal vehicle or hire our car.
